Stay safe on winter roads with these tips

Does the term ‘winter driving’ make you anxious? For many of us, there’s nothing worse than white knuckle driving through blinding snow and slippery roads. Here are some simple tips to stay safe on the roads this winter.

Invest in winter tires

It’s no surprise winter tires are the top safety tip for staying safer on the wintry roads. All-season tires really don’t live up to their name – at 7⁰C the rubber loses elasticity and hardens. The latest generation of winter tires maintain flexibility at extremely low temperatures (as low as -40⁰C) and provide up to 50% more traction than all-season tires. Winter tires qualify for a discount on insurance, but they must be installed from November to April.

Use common sense

Be aware of the conditions as you head out. Be sure your tires are properly inflated because cold weather can decrease tire pressure. Keep your lights on to always be visible. Avoid using cruise control when driving in wet, icy or snowy conditions. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes a bag of salt, blankets, flashlights, non-perishable food, water and a shovel. And always give yourself extra travel time.

Check your insurance coverage

Review your auto insurance policy with your broker or agent to make sure you’re properly covered. Policy holders are entitled to a 2.5% discount on all standard coverages on an auto policy if they have snow tires (bearing approved winter tire designation by Transportation Canada). And don’t forget, any at fault accident (including single vehicle weather-related accidents) can increase your insurance rates by 40-60% and can take up to six years to return to your pre-accident rates. So drive carefully and stay safe on the roads this winter season.
